Club History

In memory of those who founded Monklands Archery Club

In the very early days, club founder David MacPherson and his wife Margaret were instrumental in establishing a solid foundation for the growth of Monklands AC.

In the seventies, David worked at Bell College in Hamilton as a physical education lecturer. In 1972, he began teaching archery and offering archery as a sport to the students. Very soon thereafter, David set up a club called Bell College AC.

Bell College AC ran as a thriving club for both students and non-students, it was so popular that there were two weekly club nights. This also became a family activity, and his son Les Macpherson started shooting at this club with David in 1973 at age 10 and Margaret soon after.

For the next 10 years, Bell College AC was a force to be reckoned with in the Scottish circuit and produced some top-level archers under the tuition of David. In the early eighties, David & Margaret set up an additional club, Monklands AC which ran concurrently with Bell AC. After retiring, David and his trusted secretary Margaret, would now channel all their efforts into Monklands Archery Club. With David’s coaching experience and Margaret’s organisational skills, including several archers who were former Bell College AC, this became the foundation for Monklands AC.

David was very well known in the Coatbridge area and had great contacts with local businesses and MP's, which he leveraged to promote the sport of archery and the club. An avid communicator, he understood the value of collaborating, was very knowledgeable and passionate about sports, enjoyed delivering content in person, and was “a straight talker” to paraphrase an archer’s coaching engagement experience. With not much electronic media in the 80’s, and with David’s thirst to share knowledge, there were lots and lots of articles and typed coaching documents for Margeret to create and distribute.

In the nineties, Monklands AC was the club to be part of. Several of the top Scottish archers joined the club for the facilities and the level of coaching and technical expertise that David could offer them. David travelled the country, doing coaching for the SAA and GNAS.

With pride and respect, Monklands AC has two archers who hold honorary positions in the Scottish Archery Hall of Fame, Jim Buchanan and Sandy Gregory SA Hall of Fame.
Both achieved many accolades in their archery journeys, which reinforced the calibre and reputation of the club's capabilities.

Monklands AC has made a positive impact on many archers across the country, while engaging, competing, coaching, and mentoring, with the additional benefit of improving everyone’s physical & mental well-being.

To see others personally develop is a rewarding task, Brian Mahoney, MAC coach.

By provisioning these services for the community through the sport of archery, we seek the betterment of the sport and its athletes through collaboration and knowledge sharing wherever possible.

All sports should have a coaching system and a structure which encompasses the young. This planned scheme would allow and develop controlled progress – the basis of success.

Monklands AC Culture

Archery is an all inclusive sport, from age of 10 to 110, no level of ability is a barrier to enjoying the challenges this sport can bring to your physical health and mental wellbeing.

Our club has historically supported archers of all abilities to achieve winning titles at the Scottish, British, European, World, Para-Olympics and the Transplant Game levels, all of our facilities are wheel chair accessible.

Our only basic requirement is that you follow our code of conduct, and are physically strong enough to operate the equipment within a range environment safely, without the risk of harm to yourself and others.

Oh, and... Try to have fun doing so :)

As we are a non profit organisation, no value is created from onboarding new archers or operating the club, all costs and associated fees are calculated based on annual facility rental costs and affiliate fees, plus a small percentage for maintenance of equipment costs and consumables, all management of the club is done on a voluntary basis.
